Ep. 51 Regina L. Henry on Creating a Culture of Literacy in Your Home

Ep. 50.png

Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen. It creates a foundation that allows us to communicate well. While it involves these particular skills, literacy is so much more than this. It is about learning to use reading and writing in real and important ways. As parents we can encourage their literacy, and then keep it going by the simple everyday things we do in our home.

In this episode you will hear:

  • The obstacles we face when it comes to having literacy strength

  • What parents can do to create a culture of literacy in their homes

  • How we can we partner with technology to improve literacy

Key Points:

  • Literacy includes reading, writing, and speaking. It develops at different times for different children. It’s not wrong it’s just different.

  • Research shows our expectation of any child sets the bar for them. Higher expectations, rather than lower ones, help children reach milestones.

  • When creating a culture of literacy in your home, pick the things that you love. Those are the things you will be most consistent in.
